Our Rent Strikers & Suffragettes zine celebrates some of Glasgow's Suffragettes and women who led the 1915 Rent Strikes. Learn about Helen Crawfurd, Agnes Dollan, Mary Barbour, Jessie Stephen, Helen Fraser, and others... We've spent 8 years recovering the words of these women activists – gathering them from newspapers and individual own letters and texts. Their words are directly quoted inside, alongside details of their actions and campaigns.
The zine contains bold, dynamic collages were made by our team, Kinning Park Complex staff, and members of the public during zine-making workshops in 2019-2020. Text on each woman activist was written by the P&S team, from our archives.
These zines are printed on newsprint using a method of digital printing which gives bold, rich colours that pop off of the page. The zine is 17 x 25 cm (6.7 x 9.8 inches), 32 pages, and is printed on bright white 55gsm paper with a stapled binding. Printed in Glasgow with love by the amazing team at The Newspaper Club.
Please Note Sensitive Content: The zine includes a direct quote from Ethel Morehead describing being force-fed while in Calton Jail in Edinburgh in 1914. It also mentions the practice of force-feeding imprisoned suffrage activists.
These zines are included in our Education Pack on Scotland's Suffrage History.
