🎨IMAGE DETAILS

  • Bessie piping in the Procession (c.1911) — Young piper Bessie Watson, aged 9, leads a WSPU march in London. She piped outside Calton Jail to encourage imprisoned suffragettes. Inside
  • Annie’s Arboretum (1908) — Annie Kenney plants an evergreen tree honouring women jailed for the cause of Votes for Women. She was a working-class suffragette and hunger-strike medal recipient.
  • Census Sleepers (1911) — Women boycott the Census by sleeping on floors and in public spaces to protest their inability to vote.
  • The Bell-Ringer of Dundee (1908) — Dorothy Moloney drowns out MP Winston Churchill with her bell after he refuses to apologise to suffragettes.
  • Ye Mauna Tramp (1908) — Scottish suffragettes welcome Mary Phillips home from prison, dressed in tartan with a banner declaring “YE MAUNA TRAMP ON THE SCOTCH THISTLE LADDIE.”
